Representative Tom Self is holding a press conference at the Missouri State Capitol at 12:15 Wednesday (tomorrow) on the NORTH SIDE ( RIVER SIDE ) of the Capitol Building. He needs lots of kids dressed in riding gear (jersey, pants and boots) and parents. Dads are certainly welcome but kids and MOMS are REALLY important. Ed Moreland from the AMA and Paul Vitrano from MIC are flying in and will be making statements also. Steve Halterman will be there on behalf of the NMA. Media turnout may or may not be light, but the press conference will be video recorded and is going to be sent to media outlets and websites all across the nation so representation from our side needs to be big. He is trying to get permission to allow some 50 and 65 cc bikes up next to the building for a better visual, he will post later to let is know . Plan on throwing a couple of bikes in the back of your trucks even if they wind up having to stay in the trucks. Media may well record this visual anyway. Post here with # of people and bikes. He will check this website later and make arrangements accordingly. Remember this is the BACK side (again RIVER side of the capitol). We need everyone available to turn out. Remember we want to have a respectful, organized rally not a demonstration. We need Washington’s help on this and while needing to be energetic we also need to come across as reasonable. All that will PLEASE HELP!

Nothing like doing this last minute!!! Some people won't take their kids out of school to bring them. If you come from KC or St. Louis you will have your kid out of school all day. Don't get me wrong I want this thing repealed just as bad as the next guy but I think there should have been a little pre planning to this!! If there were then I think alot of people would have made the all day trip to attend.

I spoke with Tom Self today on the phone about this. He apologized for the rushed nature of this press conference, but there were some extenuating circumstances. Because of travel schedules that happened to cross, there was the opportunity to have Ed Moreland from the AMA and Paul Vitrano from the Motorcycle Industry Council here to speak at the press conference, at the same place and the same time. That time happened to be tomorrow in the middle of the day. There has not been a media opportunity presented anywhere in the country for legislators and industry representatives to speak publicly together like this. So Tom pulled it together. He understands that it's during a school day and there isn't much notice.

I personally won't be able to make it because if I go, there will be racers at Daytona SX, Lake Whitney, and a Pro-Am race in Louisiana that won't have their graphics in time. However if anyone has the opportunity to go, it will be a great help to the cause, make for better TV, and will send a message that real people want real results.

As to taking the kids out of school, I understand that schools nowadays have crazy rules and limits on absences. But for an elementary school kid or middle school kid, a trip to the Capitol can be a very educational experience. It would give you the opportunity to take the kids to see your own state representative and state senator. You could visit the Governor's Mansion. And the Capitol has a grand old museum as well as some historic paintings and sculptures.

I understand busy schedules and all, but this has a potential to put an end to the sport we all love. I would think that all the high power people from the AMA and the Motorcycle Industry would want to make this priority one and could alter their schedule to make this a more organized event! If there is poor attendance I think it will look like this doesn't have the support we say it does! I will be there with my boy only because I live close, but this thing could have had the potential to be HUGE!!!

Good point SteveS. That would kill a couple birds with one stone. Make a point to the legislature and get some education at the same time.

We will be there. Two boys dressed with clean bikes! Gotta teach the boys that you have to stand up for what you believe in!

This issue has me angered also. 770 and Steve (sorry I don't know many ACTUAL names), I was in Jeff City today for a different matter which I did very well with, and had Josh with me with his new Thor gear. (economic stimulus? The past few months we have purchased an 09 KX, new gear, helmet...I'm trying to do my part to keep other wheels turning or greased). Passed within a mile of the Capital and I didn't even know there was a press conference!!! Guarantee we would have been there!

I know its not Rep. Self's fault for the short notice, with the E mails and petitions he has been a blessing to us all. However, its just like some politicians and other dignitaries to quickly write up these legal proposals in the "invisible attempt" to protect our precious children (I have 3) and don't think things through before writing up and passing a bill like this. Making it illegal for kids to ride motorcycles or ATV's under a certain age, and the "lead" issue for import toys some infants put in their mouths and got very sick or worse off of. Someone had a post a while ago where "kids don't put the bikes in their mouths", very true!! Unless I'm mistaken this original bill was signed last August 2008 before the election to show the constituents they were doing something about the problem, due to the outcry over dangerous toys from overseas being sold here without the safety standards that should have been in place. Before that it was the food (remember the tainted milk with melatonin in it?) scare. Either way, the bill was rushed and signed without many of us.... the general public knowing what was inside. Bet lawmakers didn't either for that matter.

But either way, I agree wholeheartedly with so many riders and parents and track riders here who are deeply concerned with this issue. Here we are doing what we can to make sure we as parents (in my case) buy the protective equipment and safe bikes and ATV's for them to ride. The safety standards should come from the source, not by banning us from taking part in a sport we love to do.

But I guess thats what this topic is all about isn't it.

"Scape", stand up for what you believe in. Thats right.

I dont get on here much, so I tried to make it count. Whew. My 2-finger typing.
